Aquaphobia

Do you wish you had a healthy relationship with the water?

If you experience a phobia of the water (aquaphobia) or are fearful of deep water or large bodies of water (thalassophobia), you have come to the right place.

Fear can be overwhelming and take over. Sometimes this is helpful as it keeps us safe.  If we learn that the water is dangerous and unsafe, our fear response is activated. It can be really challenging to change this, especially if this is something that has been reinforced for many years.

Most of the time, things like drowning statics, or well-intentioned words of encouragement to “just jump in” can further isolate someone who is aquaphobic or thalassophobic. Water based phobias can be extremely debilitating and have a significant impact on your life. They can stop you joining in the fun on family holidays. Shame, embarrassment and not knowing where to go to for help can prevent people from sharing their fears and taking action.

Elise has been working with clients experiencing anxiety and trauma for over 10 years and has combined her psychological training and love for helping people create meaningful lives with her experience in the water.

As a strong, confident swimmer, Elise has over 25 years experience in the aquatic industry, including 20 years as an accredited swimming teacher (AUSTSWIM) and many years of squad training and competitive swimming. Using her understanding of the hydrodynamics of swimming and propulsion, combined with psychological techniques such as Eye Movement and Desensitisation (EMDR) and exposure based techniques, Elise helps people feel safe and comfortable in the water, so being in the water starts to feel more natural and you feel less likely to want to avoid/run or escape.

“There will be a reason why you are so fearful - it’s my job to help figure it out”

Elise will work with you, at your pace to achieve your water based goals- whatever that looks like for you.  This means there will be no rush, no pressure.
